Colts win Superbowl
In 1971 the Baltimore Colts beat the Dallas Cowboys to win their first ever Superbowl. The Blooper Bowl as it was more popularly known was wiped off every Colts fans’ memory when the timer ran down to 0:00 on Feb 4, 2007. Almost 35 years after their win against the Cowboys, the Colts ran the victory lap again at the Dolphin Stadium, Miami, FL where they bettered the Chicago Bears 29-17.
Being a Colts fan I was a bit scared at the start of the game since Manning seemed to be having a bit of a rough start. And so was the rest of the team with Rex Grossman unleashing a full on attack to take the lead to 2 digits. But then the Colts kicked right back into the game with Sanders and Hayden coming up with some good interceptions. One of Hayden’s interceptions got converted into a touchdown which in fact sealed the deal for the Colts. Adam Vinatieri was spot on in 3 out of 4 field goal attempts and the running backs Rhodes and Addai did a real good job with almost 200 yards between them.
Peyton Manning, who’s had a fabulous season, was awarded MVP. He was spot on in 26 of 38 passes with one getting converted to a touchdown, to end the season on a high note. When you come from a family where your father was a quarterback for the Saints, your elder brother was a receiver for U of Missisippi and your younger brother’s a quarterback for the NY Giants, averaging around 4000 yards per season, it’s all in a day’s work.
This time was a time with lot of milestones for the Colts.
- It’s the second time in 35 years that they won the Superbowl.
- It’s the first time they’ve won it as the “Indianapolis” Colts.
- The Colts became the first “dome” team to win in an outdoor stadium.
- Tony Dungy became the first coloured* coach to win the Superbowl.
- Dungy (Player – Steelers, Coach – Colts) became the only 3rd person in NFL history after Tom Flores (Player – Chiefs, Coach – Raiders) and Mike Ditka (Player – Dolphins, Coach – Bears) to have won the Superbowl both as a player and head coach.
All in all one of the most memorable games in the last few years that NFL has seen. Makes even the most interesting cricket match look like a drag regardless of the pee enthu, patriotism and pride.
